The Ritz-Carlton Call Changed How I Think About Business.

Fifteen years ago I stayed at the Ritz-Carlton on Amelia Island. My first time at a Ritz. 🚩
I mentioned to the concierge, almost in passing, that I was in town helping my daughter move into law school.

A year later ⏲️, the hotel called. They remembered she'd be starting her second year and offered to handle my rental car return so I could spend that time with her instead.

Nobody trained an employee to do that. Somebody just paid attention and wrote it down.
That call changed how I think about every client relationship I've built since.
Disney does this. Ritz-Carlton does this. USAA does this. They train people to notice details and act on them without being asked.
Here's what that actually does for a business:
- Higher close rates, because trust builds faster
- Better retention, because clients feel remembered
- More referrals, because people talk about how they were treated
Anyone can automate a follow up email. An AI can flag a birthday or a renewal date. But almost nobody remembers a detail from a conversation a year ago and acts on it without being asked, and that's still a human move.
I've tried to build that into every client relationship since that day at the Ritz. The companies that do this well are the ones that made someone feel known.
What's the best example you've seen of a company remembering something about you that it didn't have to?
